HILTON HEAD, SC (April 28, 2017)—The PulsePoint Foundation, a pioneer of location-aware mobile apps that empower off-duty professionals and everyday citizens to provide life‐saving assistance to victims of cardiac arrest, today announced Michael Sayre, M.D. has been named its first Medical Director, responsible for medical guidance, oversight and continuous quality improvement for the Foundation. The announcement was made at the South Carolina Resuscitation Academy, a regional program for EMS managers, EMS directors and EMS medical directors, and conducted in association with Seattle Medic One and King County EMS.

“With Dr. Sayre’s appointment, we put the Foundation in a stronger position to evaluate partnership opportunities in areas such as wearables, contemplate new time-critical incident type responses such as opiate overdoses, and more thoroughly understand clinical research results and how they might signal future engineering directions,” said Richard Price, President of the California-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit PulsePoint Foundation. “His passion and expertise for implementing and testing novel emergency medical interventions will help us move through our next phase of development in a more focused and targeted manner.”

In addition to practicing emergency medicine at Harborview Medical Center, University of Washington, Dr. Sayre has worked to ensure that the emergency medical services in Seattle and King County continue to excel. He also serves as the medical director for the Seattle Fire Department and is a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians and the American Heart Association. He is a past chair for the American Heart Association Emergency Cardiovascular Care Committee.

Dr. Sayre earned his bachelor’s degree from Xavier University and his M.D. from the University of Cincinnati. After two decades as a faculty member at the University of Cincinnati and the Ohio State University, he moved to the University of Washington School of Medicine in 2012 to create the Emergency Medical Services Fellowship training program.

PulsePoint app notifies CPR-trained citizens of nearby cardiac arrests

ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. – Beginning today, Hardin Memorial Health (HMH), Hardin County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Hardin County 911 are making a new life-saving smartphone app available in the market place. The app, called PulsePoint, is integrated in the county’s 911 system and alerts CPR-trained bystanders in the immediate vicinity of a cardiac emergency, so they can get to the scene and start CPR in the critical minutes before EMS teams arrive.

The three partners came together today at the Hardin County Government Building to announce the availability of the app. Hardin County is the second community in the state to make this app available – Erlanger, Kentucky was the first.

“We are thrilled to partner with Hardin County EMS and Hardin County 911 to bring this life-saving tool to Hardin County,” said Sharon Wright, HMH Chief Nursing Officer.

Wright added that every day, 1,000 people experience Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA), the leading cause of death in our country.

Director of Hardin County EMS John Malcomson said that number typically increases over the holidays.

“There couldn’t be a better time to roll this out,” Malcomson said.

The American Heart Association estimates that effective bystander CPR, provided immediately after sudden cardiac arrest, can double or triple a person’s chance of survival, but only about one quarter of SCA victims receive bystander CPR.

“We want to change that,” Malcomson said. “Minutes matter when it comes to savings lives, especially the life of someone experiencing a cardiac emergency. This app can make a difference in a life or death situation.”

Malcomson shared the real-life story of Rodney Druen, who attended the announcement. Druen went into cardiac arrest at his home in Sonora. His neighbor, a volunteer firefighter, administered CPR until EMS arrived.

“I wouldn’t be standing here today if it weren’t for my neighbor, Brad, and the excellent care I received from Hardin County EMS and Hardin Memorial Hospital,” Druen said.

Jamie Armstrong, EMS Supervisor, also encouraged more people in Hardin County to get CPR training.

“It’s easy to learn. There are classes available through the American Red Cross, Hardin County Government, HMH and the Lincoln Trail District Health Department, ,” said Armstrong. “This is a very caring community. What better way to take care of one another than to learn CPR and download this app?”

Bob Hammonds, 911 Director, who was also on hand for the event, reiterated that the community is pivotal to the success of the PulsePoint partnership.

“PulsePoint notifications are generated by the 911 dispatch,” Hammonds said. “It is important that all citizens know to call 911 in the event of a cardiac episode – no matter how seemingly small it is. Hesitating to call 911 could prevent life-saving CPR to be administered by a trained bystander.”

The PulsePoint app also alerts bystanders to any nearby public access automated external defibrillators (AED) which is yet another tool proven critical to surviving a cardiac emergency.

PulsePoint leaders gave the Hardin County partners high praise.

New CPR Guidelines Recommend Using Social Media and Mobile Technology to Speed Bystander CPR in Sudden Cardiac Arrests

PulsePoint CPR Response App Already Downloaded More than 505,000 Times – More than 16,500 Cardiac Arrest Responders Alerted to Date

(16 October 2015 – Redmond, WA) – For the first time, CPR guidelines issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) recommend that communities consider using social media and mobile app technology to alert CPR responders when someone nearby suffers sudden cardiac arrest. The new guidelines cite studies that show emerging mobile technologies can result in a “higher rate of bystander-initiated CPR.”

The leading bystander response mobile application, PulsePoint Respond, alerts users when a sudden cardiac arrest occurs in a nearby public place, directs them to the patient location and provides CPR guidance while paramedic units are en route to the call. The app also notifies users of the closest available Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

To date, the PulsePoint app has been downloaded more than 505,000 times and has alerted more than 16,500 responders to the need for CPR in more than 6,500 suspected sudden cardiac arrest incidents. PulsePoint is now active in more than 1,200 communities in 24 U.S. states and Canadian provinces.

The PulsePoint app has played a key role in saving several lives. The first documented PulsePoint save involved a 57-year old truck driver near Portland, Oregon, who suffered sudden cardiac arrest outside his gym and received CPR from a PulsePoint responder. In Spokane, Washington a five-week old infant received CPR from a nearby off-duty EMS volunteer working at his job as a mechanic. In Sunnyvale, California, a 63-year old father of two collapsed on a soccer field and received CPR from a college student living nearby who received a PulsePoint alert on his mobile phone.

“PulsePoint-connected communities don’t need to rely on the luck of having a CPR-trained citizen witness a cardiac arrest,” said Richard Price, President of the PulsePoint Foundation. “By directly notifying those who are qualified and nearby, PulsePoint helps put the right people in the right place at the right time. Thousands of San Diegans Register for Life-Saving Apps

More than 35,000 San Diego County residents now receive alerts on their phones letting them know of a chance to potentially save someone’s life nearby.

That’s how many people have downloaded and registered for the PulsePoint Respond app in the past year since it launched locally. The app, which is free, lets users trained in CPR know when and where their help is needed.

A second app, called PulsePoint AED, lets users know where automatic external defibrillators (AED) are located nearby. The chance of saving a victim of cardiac arrest doubles when AEDs are used in addition to CPR.

The mobile apps were launched in July 2014 and March 2015 in a partnership between the County, City of San Diego, San Diego County Fire Chiefs’ Association, American Medical Response, Rural/Metro and the PulsePoint Foundation.

More than 1,800 local AEDs are also now listed in the PulsePoint AED app. As part of the crowdsourcing campaign in March, participants competed for prizes by using the app to identify both new and existing AEDs to expand the database of AED locations. The effort increased awareness about both apps and resulted in the registration of dozens of new AEDs.

“The more users we can add, and AEDs we can register, the more lives we have a chance to save,” said San Diego County Board of Supervisors Chairman Bill Horn. “By working together to introduce and integrate this technology into the community, we are making San Diego a safer place to live.”

The Wireless Foundation launched an accompanying Twitter campaign to encourage San Diego residents to join the contest. Joe Ferraro, an Assistant Chief of Emergency Medical Services for the Miramar Fire Department, received the most points and won a new iPad, courtesy of American Medical Response. Other prizes included a signed Chargers football, signed Padres hat, Balboa Park and Midway Museum passes and Amazon gift cards.

“I want to thank all of the county residents who helped us add and verify AEDs through PulsePoint,” said Supervisor Ron Roberts, who led the effort to bring PulsePoint and its sister app to all of San Diego County. “Their efforts are making a difference. Chief Ferraro himself is a great example of how our firefighters are embracing PulsePoint. It’s also exciting to see the two apps bringing the community and first responders together in a joint effort.”

The PulsePoint app has proven especially popular with emergency responders.

“PulsePoint is something all of the local fire agencies are excited about,” said Don Butz, President of the San Diego County Fire Chiefs’ Association and Chief of Viejas Fire Department. “We’ve encouraged all of our firefighters and paramedics to download the app. It’s our way of always being available to save a life, even when we’re not on-duty. I encourage every resident who has CPR training to download the app and join our effort.”

The way the app works is all registered users who are within a quarter mile of someone in cardiac distress receives an alert on their phone asking them to respond. Up pops a map on your smartphone, as well as the location of an AED device if one is nearby.

Both of the free apps are available through Google Play or the Apple App Store. While the campaign is over, it’s still important to register AEDs with PulsePoint AED as it could save the life of someone in need. San Diegans are also encouraged to get trained in CPR, learn how to use AEDs, and sign up to receive the PulsePoint alerts and respond if needed. The American Red Cross, American Heart Association, and San Diego Project Heartbeat provide CPR and AED trainings throughout the year.

How a Smartphone App Can Help You Save a Life

App notifies you of nearby sudden cardiac arrests

When someone suffers sudden cardiac arrest, they need immediate help. That’s because the chance of surviving a sudden cardiac arrest drops 10 percent for every minute that passes before they receive cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

A smartphone app called PulsePoint Respond aims to solve that problem by connecting people struck by sudden cardiac arrest with the people who can give them help during the time it takes for emergency medical service (EMS) workers to arrive.

Sudden cardiac arrest occurs when the heart’s electrical system malfunctions and becomes irregular. The heart beats dangerously fast and blood is not distributed to the body. In the first few minutes, blood flow to the brain may be reduced so drastically that a person loses consciousness. Death follows unless treatment is begun immediately.

Finding help

With emergency medical workers taking an average of seven minutes to arrive at an address — let alone locate the patient at the address — the PulsePoint app crowdsources lifesaving help for people with sudden cardiac arrest, says Thomas Beers, Manager of Emergency Medical Services at Cleveland Clinic.

The app, which is available free on iTunes and Google Play, is integrated into the 911 procedures of participating cities. When emergency dispatchers receive a call regarding a suspected sudden cardiac arrest, they activate an alert to PulsePoint app users at the same time they dispatch local EMS.

The alert notifies app users only when an emergency is in a public place within a quarter-mile. The app uses a smart phone’s geolocation service to direct you to the sick person’s location and the nearest automated external defibrillator (AED), a portable device that checks the heart rhythm and can deliver an electric shock to restore a normal rhythm.

About 1,100 cities and 22 states across the nation participate in the PulsePoint program, which is a project of the PulsePoint Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit foundation based in the San Francisco Bay area.

Participating cities include Las Vegas and Los Angeles. In 2014, Cleveland Clinic sponsored the cost of the software integration for dispatch centers in the city of Cleveland and five suburban fire departments.

Hands-only CPR

You don’t have to be formally trained in CPR to help save the life of someone experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. You can give hands-only CPR by simply pushing hard and fast in the center of the victim’s chest. The PulsePoint app has information on how to do hands-only CPR and even plays a ticking rhythm so you can time your life-saving pushes most effectively.

Having sudden cardiac arrest victims get CPR immediately is so important that in 2008, the American Heart Association (AHA) revised its recommendations to encourage bystanders without formal CPR training to use hands-only CPR in emergency situations.

“If we don’t have people engaging in CPR early on, we’re way behind,” Mr. Beers says. “Without CPR, there’s very little chance we can save them.”

Leading killer

Sudden cardiac arrest affects about 1,000 people a day across the country and claims nearly 90 percent of its victims, according to the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation. It is the leading cause of death for people older than age 40.

Sudden cardiac arrest is different from a heart attack, which occurs when one or more of the coronary arteries is blocked, preventing the heart from receiving enough oxygen-rich blood.

With sudden cardiac arrest, CPR keeps enough oxygen in the lungs and gets it to the brain until normal heart rhythm is restored with an electric shock to the chest through defibrillation.

“The PulsePoint app engages people to work as a team to save a life,” Mr. Beers says. “The more people we have out there with this app who can catch the alert, the more likely they can help others in need and give them a better chance for survival.”

Trained in CPR? This Life-Saving App Could Make You a Superhero

When someone is experiencing cardiac arrest, PulsePoint sends alerts to CPR-certified individuals nearby

Imagine you’re with a loved one when suddenly you realize that she is suffering from chest pains. You immediately call an ambulance and wait for the paramedics to arrive. Minutes later, there’s a knock on the door. Instead of a uniformed medical professional, it’s your neighbor who is CPR certified and will help administer aid with an automated external defibrillator until the paramedics arrive.

Thanks to the San Francisco Bay Area-based non-profit PulsePoint, this scenario has become a reality. They’ve developed an app that alerts CPR-trained individuals when someone is experiencing cardiac arrest nearby.

And they’re already making a difference. According to Business Insider, PulsePoint was the conduit that helped save a baby in Spokane, Washington. A store clerk called 911 to report that a baby inside the store was turning blue. The emergency response team sent an alert through the PulsePoint app, and a mechanic just two blocks away looked down at his phone and saw a message that read “CPR needed.” He was able to locate the shop, administer CPR and save the baby’s life.

These are the kind of stories that Nancy Capelle hopes will multiply in the coming years. In 2011, just a week after turning 40 and mere hours after running a 5K race, Capelle had a heart attack and cardiac arrest in her home. She survived with minimal issues yet she says the experience led to a complete shift in her life.

“Because I did not need open heart surgery or placement of a stent, my physical recovery was quite rapid,” Capelle said. “But, the emotional recovery will take the rest of my life. I view life quite simply now — life is whatever place of moment we are in. Life is not a race to somewhere else, some greater achievement, or continuous recognition from others or acquiring material objects — it is about making a difference in people’s lives.”

Capelle quit her job in the pharmaceutical industry to work as a volunteer for the American Heart Association and then went on to become an EMT. As a volunteer for the American Heart Association, she learned about PulsePoint just a few months after her heart attack. Since then, she has made it her mission to raise awareness for the app in her small town of Wilton, Connecticut.

“I hope to help PulsePoint reach the East Coast,” Capelle said. “It’s doing well [in] the West, but the entire country needs to know about it. For PulsePoint to make a difference, there needs to be a critical mass that will download the app and respond when needed.”

Each year sudden cardiac death (SCD) is responsible for half of all heart disease related deaths, according to WebMD. Less than 10 percent of those who experience SCD survive. Survival rates increase if CPR is started within the first four minutes of an arrest occurring. For every minute that passes, the chance of survival drops by 10 percent.

“The chances of professional rescuers being able to respond to a scene in less than four minutes are unrealistic,” Capelle said. “We need to be ready, willing and able to take hands on action in a cardiac arrest situation. I am one of the less than 10 percent who have survived. I am one of the lucky ones and I want there to be many more people who are given a second chance at life.”

Every minute a victim of sudden cardiac arrest waits for CPR, their chance of survival drops by up to 10 percent.

After four to six minutes, brain damage begins to occur.

After 10 minutes, it’s often too late. Few resuscitation attempts succeed.

Now PulsePoint, an innovative new smartphone application, lets citizens trained in CPR know when their help is needed, allowing them to step in during those critical moments before a paramedic arrives. It is now available in the San Diego region, thanks to the County and a coalition of local agencies.

County Supervisors Ron Roberts and Bill Horn, San Diego Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer, San Diego County Fire Chiefs’ Association President Dave Hanneman and other local fire and government officials on Monday announced the arrival of the cutting-edge technology at a news conference at San Diego Fire-Rescue Department’s Fire Station 1.

“Sudden cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death in our country, and just 8 percent of those who experience it survive,” Supervisor Ron Roberts said. “We can do better. This app can help us change these grim statistics.”

The region is one of the largest in the U.S. to launch the app, which was developed by the Pleasanton, California-based nonprofit PulsePoint Foundation and distributed by Redmond, Washington-based emergency medical device company Physio-Control, Inc. San Diego joins the more than 500 localities around the nation that have begun using the app. Also available on Monday is compression-only CPR training from local ambulance providers Rural/Metro and American Medical Response.

“San Diego is again on health care’s leading edge by adopting this technology,” said Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer. “It is going to allow us as citizens to help one another in previously unimaginable ways. But it’s up to us to get trained, download this tool and use it.”

“Most of us have a friend or loved one who has suffered with a heart condition,” said Supervisor Bill Horn. “Sudden cardiac arrest can happen to one of those individuals, or out of the blue to any of us, at any time. You never know who or when you may be in the right place at the right time to help someone, thanks to this app.”

When a 9-1-1 call for sudden cardiac arrest comes in, an alert goes to the app at the same time first responders are dispatched. Citizens who are signed up for the app and nearby the incident are notified of the location of the victim as well as the closest publicly accessible AEDs.

How effective the app is in a community depends on citizen involvement. Get trained in CPR and sign up to receive the alerts. The American Red Cross, American Heart Association, and San Diego Project Heartbeat provide trainings throughout the year. You never know, you may just help save someone’s life! So please download the app through Google play or the Apple App store. Also available through PulsePoint is a companion app called PulsePoint AED, which allows the public to register the locations of publicly accessible AEDs in their community.

A CPR App Is Saving Lives One Text at a Time

Calling 9-1-1 triggers a life-saving chain of events from a free smartphone app.

In May of this year, cardiac arrest struck Drew Basse, a 57-year-old truck driver in Clackamas, Ore., too suddenly for him to even call for help.

“I remember sitting down in my car and the dome light being on — then I was completely knocked out,” Basse said. He didn’t even have time to call 9-1-1. But a passing security guard did, starting a life-saving chain of events involving a free smartphone app called PulsePoint.

The security guard’s 9-1-1 call automatically sent a message to PulsePoint, and a text message alert went out from the app saying that someone needed CPR.

Scott Brawner, an off-duty firefighter from Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue in Canby, Ore., happened to be on a treadmill at a nearby 24-hour fitness center when he got the app alert on his iPhone, telling him where someone was in need of CPR.

Brawner was surprised when the app kicked in, he said. “I was listening to Pandora — it turned off the radio, made a tone, and showed a map and AED location,” he said. “I had never seen the place before and I ran right to it.” On the way, Brawner could see where he was going on his iPhone map.

He found Basse alone in his car sitting bolt upright. The security guard was there and shaken up, said Brawner, and he didn’t know CPR.

“I wasn’t even breathing when Scott Brawner found me,” said Basse.

“I pulled Drew out of the driver’s seat, laid him on the ground, and started CPR. I did a few hundred cycles of hands-only CPR — 100 beats per minute, compressions only. Then the ambulance and fire department came and I moved aside. It’s a little bit of a blur,” said Brawner.

The firefighter found out about the PulsePoint smartphone CPR alert system at the fire department he worked about a year ago. “During the roll-out I thought it would be great to put on my phone, and my wife downloaded it too. She’s also trained in CPR,” Brawner said. “I’ve been a paramedic for 34 years and have never seen anything like it,” he said about the app, which works on both iOS and Android devices.

While the American Heart Association reports that 9 out of 10 of the 359,400 people who went into cardiac arrest outside of a hospital in 2013 died, Basse’s case turned out differently.
